Itahari: The Provincial Sports Development Board, Province No. 1, has put forward a plan to prepare women and adolescents for self-defense by conducting self-defense training in districts, municipalities and wards of the province.
The board has also prepared trainers by organizing a three-day self-defense training in Biratnagar in collaboration with the Nepal Self-Defense Association. 47 assistant trainers from all 14 districts of the state have been trained by internationally renowned trainers. Now, the board is preparing to deploy them in every municipality and ward of the district, said Hanshraj Wagle, member secretary of the state sports development board.
According to Member Secretary Wagle, the coaches prepared for the district in the first phase will conduct self-defense training for women at the rate of two in each municipality in coordination with the District Sports Development Committee. Speaking at the concluding function of the training, which lasted from Tuesday to Thursday, Chief Guest and Secretary at the Ministry of Social Development, Dirgharaj Mainali, said that self-defense training should be extended to districts, municipalities and wards. Mainali was of the view that in order to end violence against women, self-defense should be included in the school curriculum.
Sharing her experience on behalf of the participants, Vinita Dahal of Sunsari said that she has learned many techniques in three days. She also said that she would take the skills she has learned to the community level and teach them to the poor and backward communities. Similarly, Nilima Angdembe, who came from Panchthar district to participate in self-defense, said that the self-defense training organized for women was very important and it taught a lot. Binita felt that the share of psychological learning in the training was a bit low.
Gina Karki, president of the self-defense training concluding program and vice-president of the Sports Development Board, encouraged the women participants to move forward with positive thinking. Karki encouraged women not to look back and move forward. Stating that success cannot be achieved by becoming a complainant, Karki told thfem not to complaint parents, husband or friends and to move forward with integrity.
Chief Coach of Self Defense Training Sanju Maharjan, President of Self Defense Association DB Ranapal, Instructor Radhika Hamal, Ranjan Thapa of Sports Employees Union, Vimal Pokhrel of Regional Sports Development Committee, Meenkumar Magar of All Nepal Sports Association and Ritesh Shrestha of State Sports Development Board were present on the occasion.
Chandika Bastola, Chief of the Regional Sports Development Committee, delivered a welcome address at the program conducted by Board Member Shailesh Kumar Bista. Certificates were also given to all the women participants in the training.
