Lumbini, Oct 21: The Lumbini province government has honoured eight farmers for their contribution to food production.

The Directorate of Agriculture Development under the Agriculture Ministry of the province honoured the farmers for increasing agricultural produce through the use of agriculture technology, said the Directorate. The honoured individuals received cash and certificates during a function. The honoured are from Rupandehi, West Nawalparasi, Bardiya, Rolpa, Palpa and Dang, who were engaged in various agriculture farming.     

The province contributed 29.40 per cent of the gross domestic product of the country. According to available data, out of the total 680,015 hectares of arable land, 535,340 hectares have been used for cultivation.

Work is underway to make the province self-reliant on agricultural produce, said Yam Narayan Devkota, secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Management.     

The ministry has a goal of achieving food and nutrition security through sustainable access to food and the consumption increase, he informed. However, to increase production, it requires the timely availability of seeds, irrigation and fertilisers. But the farmers have been deprived of these facilities, complained farmers. (RSS)
